For while the tale of how we suffer, and how we are delighted, and how we may triumph is never new, it always must be heard. There isn't any other tale to tell, it's the only light we've got in all this darkness.

Surely both of us think and feel; in regard to what's comic and what's tragic, Mrs. Poole, the world is all mixed up. For this reason I have never understood why "serious" and "funny" are thought to be opposites. It is simply a truthful contradiction to me that people's problems are often funny and that people are often and nonetheless sad. I am ashamed, however, that you think I am laughing at people, or making fun of them. I take people very seriously. People are all I take seriously, in fact. Therefore, I have nothing but sympathy for how people behave - and nothing but laughter to console them with. Laughter is my religion, Mrs. Poole.

If one day you must read this letter, it will be because I am no longer among you. You will almost not remember me and the littlest ones will remember nothing at all. Your father has been a man who acted according to his beliefs and certainly has been faithful to his convictions. Grow up as good revolutionaries. Study hard to be able to dominate the techniques that permit the domination of nature. Remember that the revolution is what is important and that each one of us, on our own, is worthless. Above all, try always to be able to feel deeply any injustice committed against any person in any part of the world. It is the most beautiful quality of a revolutionary. Until always, little children. I still hope to see you again. A really big kiss and a hug from Papa.

For seven years, Ruthie and Verena Cady were never alone. When Ruthie died, Verena, knowing she could not live without her Siamese twin, spent her final 15 minutes planning her funeral.
"Verena said to go get Daddy and she gave me a list of friends she wanted to give flowers to. She asked to be cremated because she didn't want to be in a box, she wanted to be free," said Marlene Cady, their mother. The twins died on Friday.
"Ruthie died 15 minutes ahead of Verena," their mother said. "Verena talked about the whole thing. She said, 'This is the time we're going to be dying.' "
